HP3000 FAQ Topic 1

Last Updated: Friday, April 28, 2000 06:31 PM

1.1. Brief History

JK
HP3000-L began as an informal electronic and "physically mailed" monthly newsletter "HP3000 Public Networking Newsletter" published by Jeff Kell of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to compliment the Education column in _Interact_ around 1985. When BITNet's Listserv software became available to UTC, the newsletter became the HPNETS-L list, later renamed to simply HP3000-L to incorporate all aspects of the HP3000 systems into the discussion and increase visibility and readership. Comprehensive archives of past discussions are available from Listserv back to January 1990 inclusive. Archive storage and list processing resources are provided by the Center of Excellence for Computer Applications (CECA) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on an IBM 9221 mainframe. Usenet newsgroup cross-posting is provided by the Listserv/Usenet gate- way at American University which is currently managed by Jim McIntosh.

1.2. Subscription Information

JK
If you have access to Usenet news (NetNews) you can simply read articles in the newsgroup bit.listserv.hp3000-l. If your news system does not carry this newsgroup, or you do not have access to Usenet, you can join the BITNet Listserv list HP3000-L by sending a mail message to:

(from Internet): <listserv@raven.utc.edu>

(from CompuServe): IN>listserv@raven.utc.edu

with a single line (preferably no signature lines):

subscribe hp3000-l Your Full Name

Listserv will send you a subscription confirmation "soon" depending on the mail propagation delays associated with your origin. If you do not receive notification within a reasonable time, you can contact a "human" for assistance by mailing to owner-hp3000-l@raven.utc.edu or contacting the owner, Jeff Kell (jeff-kell@utc.edu). Once subscribed, remember to send postings/replies to hp3000-l@raven.utc.edu, and list requests such as signoffs and index commands to listserv@raven.utc.edu.

To unsubscribe from the list, send to the same address as above, with the single line:

unsub HP3000-L

(don't need your name - it looks at your return e-mail address.) You'll be removed from the list.

JK
Some special options for controlling your subscription:

(send commands to listserv@raven.utc.edu)...

 SET HP3000-L { MAIL | NOMAIL | DIGEST | INDEX } subscription choices
               { NOACK | ACK } posting acknowledgement
{ NOREPRO | REPRO } get your own post back
               { SHORT | IETF | FULL | DUAL} mail header options

First choice is the default. Only one of each option is allowed. And as Gilles mentioned, QUERY will show what options are currently in effect.

1.3. How to send messages to the list

CB
On the Internet, if you wish to send an e-mail message to the list (i.e. to all the members of the list) the address it to: HP3000-L@RAVEN.UTC.EDU

Every member on the list will (eventually) get a copy of the message. When REPLY'ing to a message, be careful to specify whether you intend to send your reply to EVERYONE on the list, or merely the person that posed the original question/comment. A common mistake in replying to messages on mailing lists is to send the message (intended for an individual) to the entire mailing list accidentally.

1.4. Netiquette

CB
Netiquette (network talk for Network Etiquette) are guidelines for proper "behavior" among networkers. There are exhaustive lists of DOs and DON'Ts available elsewhere, but for the most part they are all just common courtesy. In communications on the network you will encounter people that both agree with your point of view, and those that may (sometimes vehemently) disagree. Courtesy demands that we treat each others opinions with respect, and though differing opinions are welcome (and often help to educate), foul language, personal attacks, or other rude behavior (referred to as 'flames') are neither necessary nor welcome. Likewise, responding to 'flames' usually merely incite more, and are a waste of the networks' bandwidth.

1.4.1. Commonly used acronyms/abbreviations/smileys/emoticons

CB
As 'network communication' traditionally lacks the 'personal touch' and human expressions so important in personal communications, you may also see network mini-expressions mixed with text (also referred to as 'smileys'), intended to impart some sense of the emotion of the sender. Little 'smiles' ( :-) a smiling face as viewed when you turn your head to the left) are intended to impart humor, winks ";-)" are intended to impart off-the-collar remarks or wisecracks, and a variety of others will be seen in messages. "8-)" surprise, ":-(" frowns, ":^)" tongue-sticking out, etc. When in doubt, look at them sideways and use some imagination!

  Some common abbreviations:

BOF - "Birds of a Feather" - groups of users with common interest
  BTW - By the way
  FAQ - Frequently asked Questions
FWIW - For what its worth JP
  FYI - For your information
IMHO - In my humble opinion
IMNSHO - In my (not so) humble opinion
OTOH - On the other hand... JP
RFC - Request for Comments (the documents that define/decide Internet
           standards
ROTFL - Rolling on the floor laughing CB
RTFM - Read the (bleep) manual
  RUG - Regional Users' Group
SIG - signature file (name/contact info) appended to messages
         - also Special Interest Group (common among HP users - most
SIGs are sponsored by Interex or local users' groups)
TTFN - Ta ta for now JeB
YMMV - Your mileage may vary JB

1.4.2. Posting job listings

CB
Is posting job ads on the HP3000-L ok?

Generally, short ads posted infrequently are tolerated on the list. Many listers have requested that such ads give minimal details - but preferably include salary guidelines (since most interested parties seem to key on these details!). A URL in the listing pointing to more detailed information is also preferable.

Also, interested parties should check the www.3k.com web site; there is a section where we allow free posting of any hp3000 related jobs (grouped by several categories; analysts, programmers, managers, operators, etc) and postings can be placed automatically via the web page. Entries are stored in a database and can be searched on by region, job type, and keywords. Old listings are automatically removed and posters can delete their own postings once filled.

In addition, there is also an area to post resumes on this site.

Most hp3000-l list members are aware of these job postings; it is a frequently visited web area, and monthly reminders are posted to the hp3000-l list remonding users about it's availability.

1.5. List archives

There is a search engine (which you can find on the main page at www.3k.com) which indexes every word on the 3k site - including the FAQ document.

RG
The HP3000-L list archives and a search capability are available at: http://raven.utc.edu/archives/hp3000-l.html

There is also a "threaded" index of postings to the HP3000-L available at http://www.optc.com/Webbot/ - this allows you to view "threads" or groups of postings to the list grouped by message subject.

1.6. How to obtain this FAQ

CB
How to obtain the HP3000-L FAQ Document

With this new html-only version of the FAQ document (now split up into many different files) the only way to access it is via WWW - connect to http://www.3k .com/

Any questions, comments, answers to fill in the faq, or suggestions for additions to the FAQ should be sent to rcb@3k.com.
