I requested a list of suggested patches for HP-UX 10.2 from the HP
Software Support Desk. They responded with Patch Bundle 02_700_1020.
I've installed these patches on my machine running HP-UX 10.20, and
so far so good. I've made the patch bundle available on the patches/
directory of the SAC FTP server in the file patchbndl10.2.tar.Z.

The patch bundle contains A LOT of patches. These patches are the
same ones that are available from the HP WWW server, but the advantage
of the bundle is that they are grouped together so you can install
them in one step. The installation is quite simple, and only takes
about 30 minutes including the mandatory reboot.

You may have received this patch bundle on your Extension Software CD.
Please check by using swinstall and looking for the patch bundle
number. If it is number 02_700_1020, then you don't need to download
the patch bundle from me. You can just get it off the Extension CD.
(Note, those of you who received the free upgrades may have an Extension
CD, but it does not contain patch bundle 2. The free upgrade Extension
CDs are much older.)

Should you install this patch bundle? Well, it's up to you. These
patches probably fix problems that you have seen or will see. They
probably also fix a lot of problems you will never see. I installed the
patch bundle on my machine. You can make your own decision. If you'd
like more info on what these patches do, the text files for all the
patches in the bundle are included in the tar file. (See below for
how to get to them.)

To install the patches, follow these steps:

1) FTP the file patchbndl10.2.tar.Z from the SAC FTP server. This
is a BIG file. Compressed it is 22MB. Uncompressed it is nearly
40MB.

2) Put the file on a disk where you have some space. I'll use
the directory /tmp as an example, but you can put the file anywhere
on your system. Unpack the file:

  % cd /tmp
  % zcat patchbndl10.2.tar.Z | tar xvf -

3) This will create a directory "patchbndl10.2" on your system.
The text files for all the patches included in this bundle are
located in patchbndl10.2/PatchText/PB_02_700_1020/tmp/PHTXT/02/.
There are a lot of text files. You can read these text files, or
you can forego reading them. (I didn't read them.)

4) Before installing the patch bundle, I recommend making a back
up of your root file system.

5) To install the patches, you will need about 60MB(!). Actually,
the amount of disk space depends on how many patches will need to
be installed. swinstall is smart enough not to install patches
for software you don't have installed. It is also smart enough
to not install patches you already have or that have been superceded
with other patches on your system. On my system, about 34MB worth
of patches were installed. However, during the installation process,
about 60MB of space was used. I got the extra 26MB back when the
process was done.

6) To install the patches, run swinstall and point it to the software
depot at /tmp/patchbndl10.2/. If swinstall complains about a lock
file, cd to /tmp/patchbndl10.2/catalog and run the command "touch swlock".

7) Select "Match What the Target Has" from the Actions pull down
menu. When you do this, swinstall will make all those smart decisions
about which patches to install and which to ignore. If you've already
installed some patches on your system, swinstall may report that it
will not install patch "XXX" because it has been superceded by another
patch on your system. You are also free to pick and choose what patches
are installed, but I recommend letting swinstall make the decisions for you.

8) Run Install(Analysis) from the Actions pull down menu. Be sure
to check the resulting disk space analysis to be sure you have enough
space.

9) If the logfile does not report any fatal errors (like running
out of disk space) then let the installation proceed. Note, swinstall
will reboot your machine after it installs the patches.

10) After the reboot, you are done. You can remove the contents of
the /tmp/patchbndl10.2/ directory.

Please note, the Upgrade and Cold Install Instructions tell you that
you need to install the C-shell patch PHCO_9878. This patch is NOT
included in the patch bundle (a previous version of the C-shell patch
is included in the bundle). Therefore, I still suggest that you install
patch PHCO_9878, either before or after installing the patch bundle.
